What Are the Names of Abortion Pills Approved for Safe Use?
The term “abortion pill” refers to a combination of medications used to safely end an early pregnancy without surgery. The two most widely used and medically approved abortion pill names are Mifepristone (200mg) and Misoprostol (800mcg). Together, they form what is commonly known as the MTP Kit (Medical Termination of Pregnancy Kit).
Mifepristone, also called RU-486, works by blocking the hormone progesterone, which is essential for pregnancy to continue. Misoprostol, taken 24–48 hours later, causes the uterus to contract and expel the pregnancy naturally.
In India, the most commonly prescribed brand names include Mifegest Kit, Unwanted Kit, and MTP Kit — all available by doctor’s prescription only. These medications are approved by the DCGI (Drug Controller General of India) and are considered safe and effective up to 9 weeks of pregnancy.
